Most patients benefit from being sedated during a gastroscopy or colonoscopy. At Barrie Endoscopy your sedation is administered by a highly trained anesthesiologist. Intravenous medications will be used. These medications work very quickly and have a low risk of nausea or vomiting afterwards. You will wake up quickly after the procedure and most patients will feel like they are wide awake and alert. It is important to realize that even though you will feel alert, you will be impaired for several hours following the procedure. How long the sedation lasts will vary from person to person. Please read the discharge instructions carefully as you will need someone to take you home and you will not be able to drive after the procedure.
